Jagmeet Singh and the NDP will invest in Canadian journalism and CBC/Radio-Canada
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh issued the following statement in reaction to the announcement on CBC/Radio-Canada:
“New Democrats believe in the need for a strong public broadcaster. The Liberals had 10 years to make reforms to strengthen the CBC/Radio-Canada. Instead, they delayed, and prorogued Parliament—ensuring that none of these changes will ever see the light of day.
In contrast, Pierre Poilievre is waving the “defund CBC” flag, making it clear that he will threaten good, local journalism, creating media deserts across the country.
Meanwhile, Justin Trudeau’s likely successor, Mark Carney, is promising to cut government spending, with no guarantee that CBC/Radio-Canada would be safe under his leadership.
Right now, is the time to champion the things that make us uniquely Canadian, from the CBC/Radio-Canada to our compassion for one another, health care and the values we hold close. It’s not time to turn to more American content.
An NDP government will invest in journalism that can report and broadcast locally, ban CBC executive bonuses so that money can go in quality journalism, and ensure Canada continues to have a strong, reliable and local public broadcaster.”
